What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code assigned to every motor vehicle manufactured since 1981, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized the format under 49 CFR Part 565. Before 1981, manufacturers used varying formats with no consistency across the industry.

The 17-character VIN uses digits 0–9 and letters A–Z, excluding I, O, and Q to prevent confusion with the numerals 1, 0, and 9. The ninth position is a mathematically calculated check digit that helps detect transcription errors — making it possible to verify whether a VIN has been correctly recorded.

For commercial motor vehicles (trucks, buses, and trailers), the VIN encodes critical information including the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) class, body type, brake system, and engine configuration. This data is used by state and federal agencies for crash reporting, registration, and safety compliance through systems like SAFETYNET and MCMIS.
