Decode forklift model numbers from major manufacturers and identify specifications.
A forklift model number is the manufacturer-assigned code that identifies a specific configuration of a powered industrial truck. Unlike a highway vehicle VIN, which is a 17-character standardized identifier defined by NHTSA under 49 CFR Part 565, forklifts fall outside the VIN standard. Each manufacturer has independently developed its own naming scheme, so the same digit or letter in one brand's model can mean something entirely different in another brand's.
Despite the lack of a common standard, most major forklift manufacturers encode the same core attributes directly into the model number: the truck type (IC or electric, rider or walkie, counterbalance or reach), the rated capacity (usually expressed in hundreds of pounds for North American brands or in metric tons or hundreds of kilograms for global brands), the power source (gasoline, LPG, diesel, or battery electric), the tire configuration (cushion or pneumatic), and the design series or generation. A trailing suffix after a dash often indicates a design generation or a variant such as short chassis or container handler.
The data plate (also called a nameplate) riveted to the cab or frame is the definitive source of identification for any forklift. OSHA standard 1910.178 requires every powered industrial truck to display a legible plate showing the model number, serial number, rated capacity at a specified load center, and other operating specifications. For Hyster and Yale trucks the last letter of the serial number additionally encodes the year of manufacture on a 23-year cycle. For most other brands the year of manufacture requires a dealer lookup against internal records.
