How to read a Detroit Diesel ESN: legacy two-stroke and Series 50/60 formats (06R, 12VF) and modern DD13/DD15/DD16 14-character serial numbers.
Where to find the ESN
On legacy Detroit engines the serial number is stamped on the cylinder block — typically on a machined pad on the right rear of the block. On modern DD-series engines it is on the dataplate on the valve cover and stamped on the block behind the EGR cooler. It also appears on the original build sheet and in DDDL diagnostic software.
Legacy format: cylinder count + series letter
Legacy Detroit ESNs start with a two-digit cylinder count followed by a series letter code, then the sequential serial:

Series 50/60 condition code
On Series 50/60 engines (xxR prefix), the fourth character indicates the engine condition: "E" marks a factory remanufactured (Reman) engine, while "A" indicates an original build. For example, 06RE121814 is a 6-cylinder Series 60 Reman.
Modern DD-series format (14 characters)
DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines use a 14-character ESN: a 3-digit engine type code, a 3-digit vehicle application code, a plant letter, and a 7-digit serial.
